Retirement Think location, location, location when retiring in the Triangle. For retirees, choosing a place to spend their golden years is often a difficult decision. There are several things to take into consideration, not the least of which is proximity to family and friends. Having a mild climate and many entertainment choices are also important to many looking to relocate. It all boils down to that old saying “Location, Location, Location.” The main consideration when looking into retirement options is location. Typically, seniors choose to move closer to a daughter or son and want to be as close to them as possible. Once the desirable location is identified, the most important features to consider are very individual. I encourage folks to find a community that closely matches their likes. Like being close to water, lakes, streams or even the ocean. It is also important to look at the existing resident population at each community and assess whether you would feel comfortable and fit in easily. Here are just a few retirement communities: “Carol Woods”, opened in 1979 located in Chapel Hill, NC. Carol Woods offers both apartments and cottages on its 120 acre complex, it also features assisted living, skilled nursing available for residents who over time would develop a need. There is a waiting list however, so advance notice would be required. There is a age requirement, one member must be 65 years of age, and the other 55. “Magnolia Glen”, in Raleigh, NC Magnolia Glen is located right near the Crabtree Valley Mall, close to Interstate 440 and within close proximity to Rex- Hospital. RDU airport is within 15 minutes. The community backs up to Brookhaven Nature Park. This complex is nestled on over 12 wooded acres. From the information I have, they are the only rental independent living community in Raleigh, that also has cottage homes that are detached from the main building. “The Cypress of Raleigh”, Raleigh, NC There are currently 3 locations: One in Hilton Head, one in Charlotte and one in Raleigh This complex in Raleigh is situated on a 48 acre campus beautifully landscaped. These are not rentals but purchased homes. There are also Lakeview homes if so desired.
