Living in Durham

Nicknamed the “Bull City” and the “City of Medicine,” Durham has helped mold the city in what it is today- A vibrant and diverse city full of opportunities for everyone. Two Native American tribes lived and farmed this area before Europeans settled into the area around the 1700’s. Railroads came to Durham during the railroad era of the 1800’s bringing the opportunity for economic growth. Mills and manufacturing plants moved in and tobacco was in full swing. Again relatively close to RTP has help big cities grow. Durham’s population is about 204,000 people and job opportunities are a definite plus for residents of Durham. Many years ago people didn’t want to move into a diverse city, nowadays people want to raise their children in a diverse area. They don’t want cookie cutter communities; instead they want their children exposed to different cultures. There are many opportunities for those in the medical field, for instance, there is Durham Regional Hospital, Duke University Medical Center and Duke Clinics at independence Park, and all offer quality jobs. Other large businesses such as: IBM, Glaxo Smith Kline, Durham Public Schools and Nortel Networks and so many others offers so many business opportunities to people outside and within the city. The downtown revitalization project has attracted many to Durham mainly for the proximity to Duke University and RTP. The downtown remake consists of mixed-use projects; renovating old tobacco warehouses into condos. People just love the architecture and its convenience. Access to major roadways is another key factor, major malls and a lot of new restaurants popping up drawing many form all over. People from as far as Washington, D.C. are talking about purchasing new homes due to mainly what they are getting for their dollar. Great prices and great schools is what are making this city so appealing.

Things to do in Durham

What can you do in Durham? The bigger question is how will you make room on your calendar for the diverse and cultural activities? For instance, there is the Native American Powwow, includes dance, crafts, food, and singing, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, a fitness festival, American Dance festival, World Beer festival and the Bull Durham Blues festival. Shopping at Southpoint mall can keep you busy with its 140 shops and restaurants. This mall was named as the top ten places to spend in all in one place, according to USA Today. It also has a 16-screen movie theater. If you like the outdoors Durham has about 60 (+or -) parks. The strong parks and recreation program includes athletic leagues, concerts, and other activities.
